The timeframes for significant change in most evolutionary lineages are becoming so short that humans no longer live within evolution, they are becoming the dominant drivers of evolution. The logical consequence would seem to be that humans should now guide evolution, and explicitly so. In this subject, students examine how more holistic or synthetic methodologies than those traditionally used in design practice can be used to evaluate the evolutionary implications of incoming technologies. The examination draws on emerging literatures at the interface of design and guided evolution.
