This subject traces 20th century modernism in design to its sources in philosophical modernism and related practices in art, architecture and design. The subject critically analyses the evolution of 20th century design and its cultural context. The origins of modernism provide a background to the study of cultural influences on contemporary design practice. Through an understanding of the concepts and related ideas that underpin the modern movement in design, students gain a greater understanding of the context of design in their own practice. A series of lectures, studios and tutorials together with student research, study and projects, provide a comprehensive understanding of the central principles of modernism in interior design.
