Postgraduate

The subject focuses on the public aspects of International Law concerning control and protection of the marine environment. It introduces theoretical and legal issues with respect to the protection of the marine environment, and also covers various policies. The subject provides a through understanding of International Marine Environmental Law (IMEL), including relations between law of the sea and IMEL, sources of marine pollution, international management principles and state responsibilities for the protection of the marine environment. The subject discusses the regional development of the marine environmental law with respect to Australia, the North-East Atlantic Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea regions. Issues related to settlement of disputes and international cooperation are also explored.

Assessment: Research paper (80 per cent) and class participation (20 per cent)
