This subject develops in students an understanding of the global context in which Australian intellectual property law functions, skills in researching international IP issues and a comprehensive knowledge of the TRIPS agreement and a working knowledge of other relevant IP Treaties. Students gain a detailed knowledge of private international law as it relates to IP enforcement, an understanding of the moves to harmonise patent and trade mark law and a working knowledge of the disputes resolution procedures for international IP disputes. Students also gain an understanding of emerging global issues in IP including the US/Australia Free Trade Agreement; the future of copyright in a digital world; protection of traditional knowledge and the protection of expressions of folklore; the contest between developed and developing countries on IP; health, access and the pharmaceuticals industry; biodiversity, access to genetic resources and benefit sharing and a ability to contribute to public and legal discussions on these global IP issues.
