This subject studies the scholarship, strategies and skills that are required for managing the resolution of disputes in the public arena, that is, disputes that impact upon society or the community at large whether by nature of the group or organisation within which the dispute is occurring or the nature of the issues that are involved in the dispute, or both. It considers the processes of investigation and identification of issues and the parties, identification of the appropriate dispute resolution process(es), preparation and management of multi-party disputes generally, and disputes concerning environmental and similar issues, and issues of social and community concerns, ethics and values. In the development of the students' practical skills, the workshops explore strategies that can be used for policy development and where public interest groups are involved.
