Undergraduate and Postgraduate
Subject coordinator: I Dobinson

This subject focuses on the theme 'The Use of Force in International Law: from Terrorism to Peacekeeping'. It uses recent and historical case studies including Afghanistan, Iraq, the Persian Gulf and the Cuban Missile Crisis to explore the legality of the use of force in international law. It examines the use of force by states under the United Nations Charter and by regional organisations such as NATO and the OAS. It assesses the use of force by ad hoc arrangements such as the 'Coalition of the Willing', and analyses the authorisation of the use of force by the United Nations Security Council to maintain and restore international peace and security. The subject considers the use of force in circumstances of the traditional laws of war (humanitarian law), self defence, sanctions, peacekeeping and humanitarian intervention.
