This subject examines the chemical origins of the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, and the changes, including those resulting from human activity, occurring within them. Environmental contamination, including atmospheric gases and particulates, heavy metals, organics, radioactive materials and micro-organisms, are discussed in terms of pollutant sources and factors affecting their persistence, fate, bioaccumulation, toxicity and ecotoxicity. The laboratory component gives students experience in a wide range of techniques for environmental analysis.
