Disciplinary Strand – Social, Political and Historical Studies – 100 level – Elective

This subject explores various dimensions of power and change in Australia as it develops into a modern society. A central concept is that of modernity and its various implications. Students investigate a number of situations where power has been applied and where social change has occurred. These situations have been chosen to introduce the varying but complementary approaches of historians, political scientists, anthropologists and sociologists in their analyses of the ways power is exercised, the importance of collective beliefs and values, and the many formal and informal processes by which Australians generate and experience change. The subject addresses three distinct but related themes of power, social change and citizenship, in an Australia affected by and participating in regional and global events. Assessment for this subject is more extensive than for 50109 Power and Change in Australia.
