Professional Strand – Writing – 200 level

This is an introductory subject in short fiction writing for students who have some background in writing. Through a range of exemplary texts in the subject reader, students examine ideas about short fiction in its historical and cultural context. They explore narrative strategies and ways to develop a piece of short fiction by workshopping their own material. Mixed genre and experimental forms, as well as more traditional short narratives, are considered. Students are expected to work consistently and intensively to produce a fully realised and edited short story of up to 5,000 words in length, to be presented as work-in-progress to the class and submitted as their final assignment. Students also develop their critical skills: reading and giving feedback on the final manuscript of another student is an important part of the assessment process. A critical and fully cited essay about the development of short fiction is also a requirement of this subject.
