Requisite(s): 120 credit points of completed study
These requisites may not apply to students in certain courses.
There are also course requisites for this subject. See access conditions.
PostgraduateSubject coordinator: Dr S T Smith
Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are finding increased use in civil and structural engineering applications, especially in the repair and strengthening of existing reinforced concrete structures, due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Students are introduced to the types and properties of FRP materials and systems, the analytical procedures and design philosophy of reinforcing or strengthening with FRP composites, durability and long-term performance issues, and practical examples of FRP applications in civil and structural engineering throughout the world. This subject primarily focuses on the application of FRP composites to the strengthening of concrete structures. The reinforcement of concrete with FRPs and the application of FRPs to strengthen other materials such as steel, timber and masonry are also addressed. Students are required to complete a major assignment, as well as class tutorials, attend a laboratory session and a final examination.
Assessment: Major assignment (30 per cent) – students design FRP strengthening for a reinforced concrete element or structure,
two class tutorial exercises (20 per cent), a final examination (50 per cent).
