6cp Recommended studies: 49048 Wireless Networking TechnologiesPostgraduateSubject coordinator: Kumbesan Sandrasegaran
This subject aims to use fundamental knowledge of 3G and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) to develop a detailed understanding of how services, certain network functions and network engineering techniques are realised in current commercial UMTS networks. Participants study the evolution, architecture, functionality and operation of 3G and UMTS technologies existing in the market, and soon to be released. The subject covers evolution of mobile communication, standardisation, UMTS services and applications, UMTS network architecture, WCDMA: principles, radio resource management, UMTS traffic management, UMTS signalling, UMTS network planning, UMTS terminals and SIM, CDMA 2000, EDGE, and UTRA TDD.
Assessment: Case study analysis (50 per cent), software simulation project (40 per cent), online quizzes (10 per cent).
This breakdown is indicative only and may change from semester to semester.
