This subject aims to use knowledge about communication networks and protocols to develop an understanding of how network functions, such as mobility management, traffic management, etc., are realised in current wireless networks. Participants will study the evolution, architecture, functionality and operation of wireless networking technologies that exists in the market today. These technologies include GSM (Global System Mobile), HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data), GPRS (General Packet Radio System), EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution), UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), 4G Networks, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), Bluetooth, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), Wireless ATM (WATM), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Wireless Local Loop (WLL), and Mobile and Cellular IP.

Assessment: Quizzes, optional class presentations, mid-semester and final examinations, optional lab project.
