The objectives of this subject are to: introduce students to the basic concepts and terminology used in telecommunications engineering; give them basic, up-to-date, hands-on, technical skills to assist in finding employment in the field as part of the degree program; familiarise them with the telecommunications degree program and the rationale behind its structure; and introduce them to staff involved in telecommunications engineering so that they are aware of current research activities in the field.

Topics include the following: telephony – the public switched telephone network; computer communications – modems, host computers (PCs and workstations – this topic is covered in more depth), the Internet, mobile communications; broadcast systems – radio and television; integrated networks – ISDN and ATM; and an introduction to signals in communications.

Assessment: Typically assessment for this subject involves computer lab testing, project work, MATLAB workbook, quizzes and a final examination.
