This subject aims to enable students to: understand key concepts and fundamental principles, together with the assumptions made in their development, that underlie the operation and design of various energy-transfer machines and devices, particularly turbomachines and heat exchangers, along with the systems of which they are parts; deal effectively with practical engineering situations involving such machines and systems, including their selection, application, performance and design; and engage in further in-depth study or research. The subject also aims to enhance interests in its areas of study and applications. Topics include: fundamentals of heat transfer and heat exchangers; elements of compressible flow; and principles of turbomachines and applications.

Assessment: Typically assessment for this subject involves assignments and projects, laboratory work and reports, a mid-semester examination and a final examination.
