The objectives of this subject are to enable students to understand: the relationship between transport and land use; the basic concepts of transportation relating to modelling and design; and the relationship between urban form, energy use and sustainability. Students also learn to design feasible transport schemes using a variety of modes and to evaluate transportation projects in terms of their capacity, cost, environmental impact and equity.

Topics include: land-use transportation interaction; the transportation planning system; environmental impact of transport and issues in ecologically sustainable transport; design principles used in public transport; transport economics, privately funded infrastructure and freight issues; the geometric design, pavement design and the capacity of roads and the needs of pedestrians and cyclists and the overall road safety issue.

Assessment: Typically assessment for this subject will involve a combination of assignments and a final examination.
