32150 Multimedia Data Mining
6cp
Requisite(s): 32130 Principles and Practice of Data Mining Recommended studies: programming skills (Java preferable) for testing research ideas
This subject brings students up-to-speed with the research that addresses the problem of finding 'interesting things' in large collection of multimedia data sets. Such data sets can simultaneously include texts, images, sounds, videos, hyperlinks, with additional structured data. A large number of domains, including medicine, aero and space industry, digital media and education, generate large multimedia data sets. These data sets are tough nuts for data mining technologies, requiring the development of specialised methods and algorithms. The subject prepares students to undertake research studies in the front-end field of multimedia data mining, covering topics related to the theoretical foundations of multimedia mining methods and algorithms, integration of mining techniques, representation and usage of results.
