This subject introduces students to the theories and concepts of information systems and their relationship to business processes and IT infrastructure. The organisation, retrieval and evaluation of information is dealt with in the context of web-based systems. Accounting information systems are used as a basis for examining the way organisations process operational data and produce information for decision-making and external parties. The subject, therefore, covers basic accounting principles, classification of accounts, bookkeeping, reporting and budgeting. This assists the student to better understand the business rules that govern the flow of transactions through a system, the way in which the storage of data is structured, and the requirements of information extraction. The subject also covers the ways in which information systems are developed and key human aspects of the development process.
