Each year this subject explores a range of themes and issues from the period 1600 to 1945, such as Baroque and Rococo architecture and its theoretical underpinnings; romanticism and revivalism in European architecture during the 18th and 19th centuries; changing ideas on the nature of beauty in art and architecture (the sublime and the beautiful, and the picturesque); the Beaux-Arts tradition in France; freestyle architecture in England and the emergence of the arts and crafts movement; new technologies and their application to architecture; early modern architecture in Europe – Art Nouveaux architecture in Belgium and France, Modernismo in Spain, and Sezessionstil in Austria; definitions of modernism, themes and theories examined through case studies – the Avant Garde, Utopianism, the idea of Zeitgeist, Expressionism and Constructivism, the influence of the Bauhaus, Futurism, de Stijl, the effects of industrialisation, and urbanisation, urbanity and urban experience.
