This subject covers the period 600 BC–1600 AD via the exploration of specific issues and themes selected from the following: Greek architecture during the Archaic, Hellenic and Hellenistic periods and the genesis of the notion of intrinsic beauty; Roman domestic architecture between the second century BC and the third century AD; design and constructional innovation in Roman architecture in the late first and early second centuries AD; Early Christian, Byzantine and Carolingian architecture; High Romanesque architecture in France, Spain, Italy and England; the Gothic synthesis as it emerged in France between the 12th and 15th centuries; the architecture of the Italian Renaissance as reflected in the work of Brunelleschi, Alberti, Bramante, Michelangelo, Romano, Vignola and Palladio; and architectural theory from Vitruvius to Palladio.
