Overview

This course is designed to meet the increasing industry need for graduates with both computational and analytic skills. It offers the prospect of careers which require a sound knowledge of computing together with the ability to analyse and model practical situations.

Demand for mathematics and computing skills is increasing as quantitative analysis becomes more widespread in dealing with commercial and industrial problems. There is also a growing need for teachers with skills in computing as well as mathematics, and graduates of this course are well qualified to fill this role.

Career options

Career options include technical applications software developer, systems programmer, software engineer and quantitative analyst. Teachers with qualification in this field are also highly sought after. Graduates can gain employment in a range of companies and industries that rely on IT and computational techniques, including finance companies, banks, insurance, logistics and transport, and manufacturing.

Articulation

This program has three variants:

All three variants articulate with the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Information Technology (C09019).

Additional assumed knowledge

Mathematics (prefer Mathematics Extension 1) and English.

Course duration and attendance

The degree is offered as a full-time course over three years, or as a part-time course over six years.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Mathematics and Computing is offered as a Pass degree requiring the completion of subjects with a total value of 144 credit points. The course consists of an integrated sequence of subjects in the mathematical sciences and information technology.

Students are required to choose a major in Mathematics, Quantitative Management Science or Statistics.

Course completion requirements

STM90402 Core subjects 120cp
CBK90280 Specialisation choice 24cp
Total 144cp

Course program

The course programs shown below assume commencement in Autumn semester. Example programs are shown for the first three semesters, which are taken in common, then semesters four to six for each of the three available majors, assuming full-time attendance in all cases.

The example programs assume that the student chooses to take the core distributed computing architecture subject, which is currently offered only in Spring semester. Students choosing to take the alternative core information classification and control subject, which is offered only in Autumn semester, should adapt the example programs as necessary.
