University of Technology SydneyHandbook 2006

Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at UTS. This is a city university on the edge of the Darling Harbour precinct of Sydney. It's an exciting place. Its Science Faculty has first-class people, first-class equipment and a passion for the most interesting ideas in the most interesting areas of science. We're glad you've chosen to join us.

This handbook provides you with the relevant course information you will need to complete your studies as smoothly as possible. If you need any further information or assistance, our staff in the Faculty Office are ready to help you. If we can't answer your questions, we'll know who can. If things aren't working as you think they should, we know who to talk to.

At UTS we're interested in science and technology that will change the world. And we like to bring the world on board as the means to do that. We pride ourselves on our professional connectedness. We are aware of the needs of all our students, whether undergraduate, postgraduate, research or coursework, on their lifelong journey of learning.

We aim to create an environment that will make you feel in charge, and in which what you learn is relevant and real. No matter what your interest – biotechnology, nanotechnology, forensic science, environmental science, medical sciences, mathematical and statistical modelling – we hope that our courses connect you with the people both inside and outside UTS who will make that interest work for you.

I wish you an enjoyable and productive year, and I know that you'll find your time at UTS rewarding both professionally and personally.

Professor John Rice, Dean
