Overview

This course integrates information technology with a major in the language and culture of another country, enhancing professional training and career options. The information technology component provides a sound education in all aspects of computing and information technology for a career in the profession. The International Studies component offers an in-depth understanding of another culture through academic and experiential learning.

The course adopts a practice-based approach to IT education. The course content is designed with a mix of theory and practice. As well as gaining strong technical skills in IT, students gain skills in problem solving and teamwork. Employers look for graduates with industry experience, and in this course students are exposed to real IT problems and apply classroom learning on the job through the industrial training program. The International Studies component of this course means that graduates have the added advantage of being well prepared to work in a diverse range of IT careers in multinational companies.

Course aims

The course aims to:

  • provide a suitable background in all aspects of computer science and information technology, short of the actual design and construction of hardware systems
  • provide sufficient language skills to study and live in another culture, and
  • encourage understanding and appreciation of, and sensitivity towards, diverse cultural perspectives, practices, needs and values, in international and local contexts.

Career options

Career options include software developer, network engineer, systems analyst, web developer, network specialist or software engineer. Graduates of this course are in high demand with technology companies and industries that use technology such as banking, finance, retail, energy, government, transport, construction and manufacturing. Options will be enhanced by international experience, making students more marketable to prospective employers.

Articulation

Students in either of the single degree programs Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Diploma of Information Technology Professional Practice (C10152) or Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (C10148) can apply to transfer into this course after completing the first year of their current course. Applications will be assessed by the Faculty of Information Technology and the Institute for International Studies. Students in this combined degree may apply to transfer to a single degree Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Diploma of Information Technology Professional Practice.

Additional admission requirements

Admission requirements for the combined degree are consistent with the admissions requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Diploma of Information Technology Professional Practice (C10152). There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.

Additional assumed knowledge

For the information technology component, assumed knowledge is Mathematics and any two units of English. Mathematics Extension 1 and English Advanced are recommended. There are no prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.

Additional recognition of prior learning

The following refers to the information technology component of the course. Students who have previously undertaken study at a university or other recognised tertiary education institution may be eligible for some academic credit for their prior study if the subjects previously completed are deemed by the Faculty of Information Technology to be equivalent to core subjects in the course.

The prior study must have been completed before commencement of this course, and no earlier than three years before commencement. Students must be able to demonstrate that their knowledge is current.

Credit is not normally granted for elective subjects.

International applicants who have completed a Diploma of Information Technology at Insearch, with a weighted average mark (WAM) of 60 per cent or greater and no more than two failures, are eligible for 48 credit points of advanced standing.

Local applicants who have completed a Diploma of Information Technology at Insearch, with a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 per cent and no more than two failures, are eligible to apply for this course but have no guarantee of entry.

Applicants who have completed a Diploma of Information Technology at TAFE NSW may be eligible for up to 24 credit points of advanced standing.

Details of specific patterns of recognition of prior learning are available from the Faculty of Information Technology.

No academic credit is available in this course for study completed at a private college.

Course duration and attendance

The course is of six years' duration. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas. The fifth and sixth years may be completed part time.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 252 credit points, comprising 156 credit points in information technology and 96 credit points in International Studies.

All rules that apply to the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Diploma of Information Technology Professional Practice (C10152) also apply to students in this course.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. Students study language and culture in their second and third years and spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.

Industrial training/professional practice

The Diploma of Information Technology Professional Practice incorporates a minimum of nine months of paid work experience and four supporting subjects at UTS. After completing Year 4 (In-country Study), students spend a period of time working in the information technology industry full time. Students may then elect to finish their studies part time while continuing to work, or may spend a period of time working full time and then return to full-time study.

For full details, refer to the Diploma of Information Technology Professional Practice.
