Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Media Arts and Production is part of an articulated program in Media Arts and Production which includes film, video, multimedia, sound, radio, performance and installation, and the interplay among these media forms.

Course aims

This course aims to provide students with: core skills in either film and video, new media or sound production; expertise in their core area or another area of media arts and production; a capacity to think creatively and critically about, and contribute to, developments within the media industries; an awareness of industry practices in media production; the capacity to develop and critically revise their own work; and project management skills in the context of a media project.

Career options

Career options include film producer, filmmaker, sound designer, new media producer, cinematographer, documentary maker and screenwriter.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must demonstrate a strong level of education, background and capability. It is expected that applicants will have an undergraduate degree and/or professional or creative experience in a media production field and that they will have demonstrated a high level of interest and knowledge in media arts and production.

Additional recognition of prior learning

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma and who are admitted to a more advanced-level course in the program are eligible for recognition of prior learning for completed subjects in the more advanced course.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered on a one-year full time, or equivalent part-time basis.

Course structure

Students in the Graduate Diploma in Media Arts and Production complete 48 credit points of study in one of three streams: Film and Video, New Media, or Sound.

In the Film and Video stream students complete a total of six subjects which includes 16 credit points of core Media Production subjects in Film and Video, 16 credit points of additional Media Production subjects, and 16 credit points of 400-level Media Arts subjects.

In the New Media stream, students complete a total of six subjects which includes a minimum of 24 credit points of core Media Production subjects in New Media, one New Media Arts subject and one other 400-level Media Arts subject and one subject from a list of relevant electives.

In the Sound stream, students complete a total of six subjects which includes a minimum of 24 credit points of core Media Production subjects in Sound, one 400-level Media Arts subject related to Sound, one other 400-level Media Arts subject and one subject from a list of relevant electives.

Full-time students undertake 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students undertake at least 8 credit points per semester.

Note that the Film and Video stream full-time and part-time programs shown below are for Autumn-commencing students. Students commencing in Spring semester undertake the same sequence of subjects as Autumn-commencing students.
