The structure of the Institute is available on the Institute's website.
The mission of the Institute is to create change towards sustainable futures. Its objectives are to:
The Institute offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Futures (C02037) and a Master of Sustainable Futures (Research) (C03032) to both local and international students. The Institute does not offer coursework degrees.
Applications for postgraduate research places at the Institute are subject to the same criteria as applications to any UTS course.
Further information on the University's requirements for postgraduate applications and on scholarships and fees can be found on the University Graduate School (UGS) website:
From the UGS website, you can also access the STAR (Skills to Advance Your Research) website. This is an excellent resource for prospective and current research students, and includes guides to writing formal research proposals.
International applicants should contact the International Office. Information on contact details, courses and application procedures are available on the International Office website at:
Initial inquiries should be directed to the Insitute's website. It provides an outline of the steps required to proceed with an application to study and a list of possible research questions and topics in which ISF is interested. (Note: Prospective students are not limited by this list if they have other appropriate areas of interest.)
Interested applicants should then write and email a paragraph or two about their proposed research, how they might approach the subject (methodology) and an indication of some of recent reading in the area. This proposal enables the Institute to assess whether or not it has the supervisory capacity to proceed with the application on a formal basis.
Email the proposal to:
It is generally advisable to apply for a scholarship at the same time as applying for entrance to a PhD if planning to study full time. Applications for entry to the PhD program can be made at any time, but scholarship applications are only processed in October each year. Further information is available online at:
The University also has a very limited number of International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) for international students, funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government. These scholarships cover tuition fees and basic health insurance, but do not have a living allowance component.
