The Postgraduate Certificate in English Language Teaching has been designed to meet the needs of teachers of English in Japan. The course develops knowledge and teaching skills, with the focus on the development of effective spoken and written communication.
UTS was selected by the Australia–Japan Foundation to deliver this distance learning course as the major partner in the English Language Teacher Education Australia (ELTEA) consortium. The course provides practical activities which teachers can use in their own classrooms.
The course develops teachers' understanding of the interrelationships between context, theory and practice in English language learning, and aims to meet the needs of teachers and students using a variety of teaching methodologies as recommended by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
This course is a stand-alone course as well as a pathway to the Master of Arts in English Language Teaching (C04192).

This course is completed over a one-year, part-time period.
Subjects are offered in distance mode, and semesters start in March and September.
The course totals 30 credit points of study. There are three compulsory subjects, totalling 18 credit points. Students then choose a further two subjects from a list of elective subjects worth 6 credit points each.
The course has been specifically designed for English teachers in Japanese classrooms, and comprises distance materials specifically designed for the Japanese context, which include Japanese translations of subject glossaries, overviews, aims, objectives, key concepts and assessment tasks. Each subject also includes explanatory margin notes in Japanese.
