The Master of Education is designed to meet the specific educational needs of those desiring to be at the forefront of learning and development in educational, vocational, organisational or community settings. Students choose from a wide variety of subject areas including educational leadership, policy, research, human resource development, curriculum development, program development and many others, to form a program of study that suits their professional development needs.
Graduates are well positioned to be at the cutting edge of learning and change in school, community and organisational settings. Given the Faculty's equal strengths in adult and school education, the course offers distinct opportunities to study learning and education across all education sectors.
The aims of the course include: developing expertise in understanding and managing learning; acquiring new and more advanced knowledge in designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs; expanding and evaluating the personal capacity to be self-directed in learning; and developing and applying techniques of critical inquiry to education practice.
Career options include educational and training leadership roles in various capacities, such as planning, curriculum development and management in teaching and learning organisations, policy making, research and consulting.
Progression from this course to the Master of Education (Honours) (C03038) or to a doctoral degree depends on obtaining assessment feedback that satisfies the requirements of the higher degree selection committee.
Admission to the course is based on one or more of the following:
Students who take two subjects per semester complete the degree in two years. Students who take one subject per semester complete the degree in four years. There is, however, freedom to vary the pace of study. The course can also be completed full time in one year.
Three main delivery modes may be used: on campus, intensive weekend block with distance study, and full distance study.
The Master of Education requires the completion of eight subjects, totalling 48 credit points of study. There are no compulsory subjects, but students are advised to complete particular subjects if they anticipate moving on to a research degree.
Potential subject areas include: adult learning and program development; adult communication and management; vocational and workplace learning; leadership in educational organisations; experience-based learning; popular education; and health education and health promotion.
