Overview

This course is designed to meet the professional development needs of a broad range of practitioners desiring to be at the forefront of adult learning and development. The course develops an in-depth understanding of adult education and training, offering a wide choice of subjects to study. Underlying the course is a coherent, practitioner-centred pedagogy, geared towards education at the post-compulsory level.

The open and flexible structure of this course means students can determine their own subject choices to fit their particular interests and career needs. Subjects include educational and organisational leadership, human resource development, psychology of adult development, learning strategies, communication management, mentoring, organisational learning and research.

Course aims

The aims of the course include: developing expertise in understanding and managing adult learning; and developing new and more advanced knowledge in designing, implementing and evaluating educational programs for adults.

Career options

Career options include educational and training leadership roles in various capacities, such as policy making, research, consulting, planning, curriculum development and management in teaching and learning environments.

Articulation

Progression to Master of Education (Honours) thesis or doctoral degree study depends on obtaining assessment feedback that satisfies the requirements of the higher degree selection committee.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants require a Bachelor's degree and evidence of involvement in adult education in either a professional or a voluntary capacity.

Course duration and attendance

Students who do two subjects per semester complete the degree in two years. Students who do one subject per semester complete the degree in four years. There is, however, freedom to vary the pace of study. The course can also be completed full time in one year.

Three main delivery modes are used: on campus, intensive weekend block with distance study, and full distance study.

Course structure

Students complete eight subjects, including one core subject. The criteria used to choose subjects should be shaped by both intellectual and career considerations. A list of possible subjects is provided in CBK90044.
