Welcome to the Faculty of Education at UTS.
The Faculty offers programs that prepare students for professional practice in the full range of educational contexts: primary and secondary teaching, community education, Aboriginal education, vocational education, language and literacy education at school and adult levels, and human resource development. Our adult education program is one of the largest in the world with over 40 academics involved in a variety of fields. The primary program offers the full range of curriculum areas and we have specialist secondary programs in English, mathematics, personal development, health and physical education, science, technology and applied studies, and visual arts education.
The Faculty is situated on two sites: adult, vocational and language and literacy education at City campus in the central area of the city, and primary and secondary teacher education, music therapy and creative arts on the North Shore at UTS's Kuring-gai campus, set at the edge of a national park, 20 minutes from the city centre.
The Faculty has around 180 research students. In late 2003 the Master of Education (Honours) (C03038) and Doctor of Education (C02042) were introduced into Hong Kong.
The Faculty houses six groups and centres: OVAL Research (the Australian Centre for Organisational, Vocational and Adult Learning); the Centre for Language and Literacy; the Centre for Popular Education; Changing Knowledges, Changing Identities Research Group; Teacher Learning and Development Group; and the Centre for Research and Education in the Arts. In addition, the Faculty runs short courses for industry professionals through the Training and Development Services unit.
The Faculty is distinguished by its global operations and its commitment to internationalism. Over recent years we have run courses and other projects in a variety of offshore locations including Laos, Mexico, Japan, Oman, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Vietnam and mainland China. In addition, teaching experience practicums in the primary program are offered in China, Samoa and Thailand.
With the Institute for International Studies, the Faculty offers three combined degrees: Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (C10208); Bachelor of Education in Adult Education, Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (C10196); and Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning and in International Studies (C10198).
Over recent years we have increased the flexibility of our modes of delivery and many of our courses are now available through distance mode or through some combination of distance, block and weekly attendance. All of the distance courses are supported by web-based conferencing tools.
The innovative Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning (C10197), introduced in 2001, continues to grow. This degree addresses the increasing need for professionals who can manage the learning process in organisations. The Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning is the first degree in Australia with a sequence of study in e-Learning, one of the most dynamic and exciting fields in today's learning environment. Students can add an international focus through the combined Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning and in International Studies (C10198) degree, or develop research capabilities through the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Organisational Learning (C09043) program. Most of our courses offer subjects in, or integrate, online learning, and we offer one of the only Master's degrees in Australia devoted to e-Learning.
The Faculty draws on expertise from other areas of UTS in its combined degrees and continues to explore further ways for students to benefit from the richness and diversity UTS offers.
The Faculty of Education is committed to practice-based learning and currently offers courses using workplaces as the site of learning. Work-based learning offers students the opportunity to attune their own and their organisation's goals with the objectives and outcomes of the University's courses.
