Overview

This course is designed to produce graduates who are prepared for scientific practice in the biotechnology industry, or who are equipped for entry into business and management in scientific institutions.

The course offers opportunities in the growth area of health services and management. It produces professionals who can find new ways of using biotechnology in industry.

Career options

Graduates of this course will find employment opportunities as a scientist or manager in bio-analytical labs and in bio-businesses, CSIRO, government biotechnology support, regulatory agencies, wine production, vaccine manufacture and stock-broking. Graduates may also opt to be an analyst, biotechnologist, research scientist, marketer or a product developer with industry or scientific research organisations. In short, graduates have a wide range of career opportunities, as they are taught the fundamental knowledge and skills of current and future biotechnology industries. Graduates will be well equipped for immediate employment in management and business in scientific firms and institutions.

Articulation

There is provision for students already enrolled in a Bachelor of Biotechnology or a Bachelor of Business degree to transfer to this combined degree program, provided they meet the entry requirements for the combined degree and/or have demonstrated satisfactory progress in their current program of study.

Additional assumed knowledge

Mathematics; English; and at least one science subject recommended.

Course duration and attendance

This combined degree course is offered over: four years, full time; eight years, part time; five years, full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (not available to international students); or five years, full time with Honours.

Full-time attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University. Part-time attendance involves approximately 12 hours each week at the University. Part-time students may need to attend science classes for at least one half-day per week, in addition to evening classes.

Course structure

The course comprises a total of 192 credit points. Students are required to complete 96 credit points of medical science subjects and to complete 96 credit points of business subjects.
