The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is not offered as a separate degree, but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.
Students are encouraged to undertake the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students), an industrial experience program requiring an additional year of full-time study.
OverviewThis combined degree program is aimed at increasing awareness of international contexts and producing graduates who are well prepared for professional careers in science in an international setting.
This industry-respected degree allows students to choose their own career, be it brewing beer, researching anti-cancer drugs, engineering agricultural crops, manufacturing drugs or medicine, managing a biotechnology company, trading in biotechnology shares, mining uranium, bioremediation of contaminated sites, growing yeast for bread, teaching science, writing about science and regulating the expanding bioscience industries.
Graduates will have the opportunity to work overseas or in Australia in organisations with international networks or links.
Admission to the combined degree is on merit according to the admissions policy for the Bachelor of Biotechnology (C10172). There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.
There are no prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.
This course is offered over: five years, full time; six years, full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (not available to international students), or six years, full time with Honours.
Attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.
Students must complete 240 credit points of study, comprising 144 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Biotechnology and 96 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies.
