Overview

This combined degree program is aimed at increasing students' awareness of international contexts and producing graduates who are well prepared for professional careers in science in an international setting.

Career options

Graduates will find employment opportunities in various industries: as a scientific journalist, product development specialist, technical specialist, marketer, research scientist, cytologist, medical laboratory scientist, material analyst, health and medical physicist, communication specialist, computer modeller, energy technologist, environmental research officer, national parks research officer, environmental consultant, nursery manager or owner, exploration geologist, engineering geologist, coastal management expert, marine scientist, etc.

Depending on the science majors chosen, graduates could find themselves working in very diverse industries, e.g. commodity and resource trading, pharmaceutical, consumer goods, medical research, health services and management, hospitals, research organisations and environmental protection agencies.

With the one-year international experience gained from studying and living overseas, graduates find it easier to adapt and work overseas or even in Australia in organisations with international networks or links.

Additional admission requirements

Admission to the combined degree is on merit according to the admissions policy for the Bachelor of Science. There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.

Additional assumed knowledge

There are no prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.

Course duration and attendance

This course is offered over: five years, full time; six years, full time with successful completion of the Diploma in Scientific Practice (C20038) (not available to international students); or six years, full time with Honours. Full-time attendance involves approximately 24 hours each week at the University.

Course structure

All students must complete 240 credit points of study, comprising 144 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Science and 96 credit points relating to the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies.

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.
