Overview

This course prepares students to teach people with mild to severe disabilities in special education settings, as well as regular primary classrooms. The special education subjects prepare students to teach all ages with a wide range of disabilities and learning difficulties – hearing impairment and vision impairment are not included.

This course has been designed to respond to increasing demands for staff with expertise in special education, as well as in regular primary education. Students receive dual qualifications in primary and special education.

Career options include teaching children and adults with mild to severe learning difficulties in schools and community settings.

Additional assumed knowledge

Any two units of English and any two units of Mathematics.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is four years of full-time study. This course can be undertaken on a reduced load providing studies are completed within six years.

Course structure

The course totals 192 credit points of study. The three strands in the Bachelor of Education in Special Education are: Professional Experience, Curriculum Studies, and Educational and Contextual Studies. There is no elective strand in this course because special education subjects have replaced them.

Practicum in Semesters 5 and 6 are in special education settings. Practicum in Semesters 7 and 8 may be located in special education settings.
