The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies is not offered as a separate degree, but is completed only in combination with the professional degree program.
OverviewThis degree combines the current Bachelor of Education in Adult Education (C10194) program with the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies program. It provides students with an Adult Education degree with additional international experience and exposure, as well as the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of a language and culture other than English.
The design of the Education component of the course enables students to study the core theoretical subjects that underpin the field of adult education, while at the same time providing them with the specialist knowledge of the various fields of practice. The electives also provide an opportunity for individual participants to pursue particular areas of interest within the diverse field of adult education.
Career options include human resources or training and development in the private or public sector; workplace educator developing staff or managing organisational change; environmental/health/vocational educator in TAFE, the armed forces, the police service, emergency services, health care agencies or Aboriginal education; or working with adults developing their language, literacy and numeracy skills. Options will be enhanced by international experience, making students more marketable to prospective employers.

Admission to the combined degree is on merit according to the admissions policy for the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education (C10194). There is a range of entry levels to the various Language and Culture programs. Students are admitted to the International Studies program with no guarantee of entry to a specific major, although every effort is made to meet students' preferences.
There are no prior language requirements, except for programs within the Heritage major.
The course duration is five years of full-time study. Students spend their fourth year of study at a university overseas.
Students are required to complete 240 credit points of study, comprising 144 credit points in Adult Education and 96 credit points in International Studies.
The Bachelor of Education in Adult Education (C10194) component comprises 48 credit points of core subjects, up to 48 credit points of specialist subjects for the selected major, and 48 credit points or more of elective subjects.
The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies requires undergraduates to study a major – a region or country – over a minimum of three years. Students study language and culture in the second and third year.

Supervised field experience in each major includes a teaching practicum.
An example program is given for a student undertaking the course full time with the Indonesia major as the International Studies major and Language, Literacy and Numeracy as the Adult Education major.
