Overview

Course aims

The course aims to equip students with sufficient skills and knowledge for the practice of the architectural profession, and to encourage in students a capacity for critical thought and an understanding of the humanistic and sociocultural aspects of architecture, ensuring a balance between theoretical and conceptual approaches and the pragmatics of practice. Upon graduation, UTS students have typically gained a broad architectural education as well as significant practical experience, and hence are highly regarded by the profession. Together with the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, the two degrees acknowledge the nature of architecture as both a discipline and a profession.

Course duration and attendance

The Bachelor of Architecture is a two-year, full-time (or equivalent) degree. The course is designed to allow students to tailor their study patterns according to their lifestyle and specific career path. Even while studying full time, flexible timetabling and the option of practice-based learning subjects allow students to gain experience in the industry.

Course structure

The course comprises 96 credit points. The Bachelor of Architecture cannot be taken as a stand-alone degree, and therefore this 96 credit points follows the successful completion of the 144-credit-point BA or 168-credit-point BA(Hons) degree, or other suitable prior learning.

All students undertake an architectural design dissertation – a combination research and design project initiated by the student on a topic of his or her choice.

Course completion requirements

Industrial training/professional practice

Students who are working also have the option of taking selected subjects in practice-based learning mode, which acknowledges the value of practical industry experience through academic credit.

Course program

The program shown assumes prior completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture over Years 1–3 then full-time attendance in Years 4 and 5 to complete the Bachelor of Architecture.

Honours

A Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) is also available, requiring no additional time or credit above that of the base degree. Note that this is subject to change from 2006. Contact the Faculty for details.

Professional recognition

NSW Architects Registration Board; Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA)

The Bachelor of Architecture is a qualification accepted for candidates seeking to take the professional examination of the NSW Architects Registration Board and Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA), as a prerequisite to registration under the provision of the Architects Act administered by the NSW Architects Registration Board; and to professional membership of the Institute.
