Overview

This course is designed for students who hold a Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Midwifery or equivalent, and who wish to convert this to a Master's degree.

Course aims

The course is designed to facilitate the advancement of midwifery theory and practice through a range of perspectives based in research, education, management and the delivery of care in a variety of situations. Students engage in critical thinking in order to inform clinical judgment and decision making within the midwifery context of woman-centred practice. The course enables students to develop a complex understanding of issues related to interdisciplinary collaboration in the development of maternity services. There is an opportunity for students

to engage in the practical use of a range of databases in order to access and develop evidence to support and shape midwifery practice and new models of care.

The course offers students the opportunity to customise their program to meet personal learning needs or workplace requirements.

Advanced standing

Students who hold an existing Graduate Diploma in Midwifery are eligible to apply for advanced standing of four specified subjects (24 credit points).

Course duration

The Master of Midwifery (Conversion) is offered over a two-year, part-time period. Students with a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery may complete this course over a one-year, part-time period.

Course structure

This course comprises 48 credit points:

  • Six specified subjects
  • Project or two elective subjects at 500 level.
  • Students who hold a Certificate in Midwifery must complete a total of 48 credit points with a minimum of 18 credit points at 500 level.
