Overview

This program is part of a suite of Innovation Degrees offered by the Faculties of Engineering, Information Technology, and Science in cooperation with the Faculty of Business. This suite of degrees employs a cross-disciplinary team-based approach to course curriculum and delivery. The programs are designed to foster graduates' abilities to develop and commercialise technology-based initiatives.

The Bachelor of Engineering Science in Engineering Innovation includes an engineering component and an innovation core component. The innovation core component of the program equips students with an entrepreneurial attitude and the appropriate business skills to transform new ideas, knowledge and technologies into new products and processes. Graduates will also have the capacity to manage risk and to create an environment conducive to innovation.

The engineering component of the program is focused on the enabling technologies needed for the development of advanced electromechanical systems. The course covers mathematical and physical system fundamentals and the foundations of both the electrical and mechatronic engineering disciplines. Students will choose to further develop their engineering expertise in one of these disciplines. Graduates of the course will have the option of immediate employment in the technology sector of industry, starting up their own company or continuing their studies to gain a BE degree.

Admission requirements

At present this course is only available to current school leavers.

Limited places are offered for this program and a high UAI is expected. Although there are no formal subject prerequisites, the Bachelor of Engineering Science in Engineering Innovation is taught on the assumption that students have competencies equivalent to English Standard, HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and Physics.

Course duration

This program is offered on a three-year, full-time basis, including eight weeks of targeted industry experience during the Summer session between the second and third years of the course.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Engineering Science in Engineering Innovation provides students with a grounding in business innovation and in both the mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines. Electives allow students to develop a strength in one of these disciplines and to pursue areas of interest. Later options include a further 48 credit points of study to complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical and Mechatronic, Electrical or Computer Systems Engineering.
