The Master of Arts in TESOL is a practice-oriented course designed for those wishing to teach English as a foreign or second language. It has been designed to cater for both trained teachers wishing to upgrade their qualifications, and those wishing to obtain an initial teaching qualification. This degree provides a mix of practical and theoretical subjects focusing on curriculum design and on the practice of English language teaching.
The course is specifically designed to meet the needs of international students in that it provides additional English language tuition and support, as well as a range of subjects that are relevant to the needs of those working in the profession of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education.
This course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes required of English language teachers in international contexts. It is based on recognition of the integral relationship between context, theory and practice.
This course aims to:
- enable you to consolidate or extend your specialist professional competence as a practitioner in teaching spoken and written English in an international context
- strengthen your understanding of the relevant theoretical underpinnings, particularly in relation to knowledge about language and language learning
- enable you to apply new understandings about teaching English to your classroom, by developing practical English language teaching skills relevant to your teaching context and to your purpose for learning English
- enable you to become a reflective practitioner who is able to make pedagogical choices and judgments based on a coherent understanding of key issues in second language teaching
- develop or strengthen your capacity to undertake leadership roles whether as a curriculum developer, researcher, program manager, adviser or exemplary teacher, and
- equip you with the skills, knowledge and critical perspectives to undertake theoretically informed research or curriculum development
Entry requirements are:
- an undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognised university (essential)
- some teaching experience (desirable).
English language requirements
An IELTS of at least 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing (TOEFL 550) is required.
English language support is fully integrated into the course. At entry, students receive initial English language training specifically for this course. Tutorial support is provided at each stage of the course and provides specific support for each of the subjects undertaken by the students
Attendance is required full time. The course is delivered in weekly mode.
The Master of Arts in TESOL (International) is normally completed in one-and-a-half years of full-time study or one year of full-time study if you are exempt from Professional Experience and English Support subjects
The course consists of 12 subjects, normally studied over three full-time semesters. Eight subjects are compulsory and four subjects are chosen from the list of possible electives. All subjects are 6 credit points (72 credit points in total). Students who possess a recognised teaching qualification and English language teaching experience may be exempt for up to four subjects.

Assessment tasks for subjects in this course may include essays, journals, units of work as well as take-home or in-class examinations. Assessment is criterion-referenced. This means that you are assessed on whether you meet certain criteria. Assessment for some subjects is on a Pass/Fail basis. Most subjects are graded according to the range of grades adopted by the University.
