Course program
Visual communication design involves the visual presentation of messages in an ever-expanding range of contexts. Designers are employed for their expertise and imagination in finding effective expression of the message. The message may need to instruct, direct, inform, entertain and/or persuade and its form may include text, image and/or sound generated digitally or by hand. The medium of the message may be static or dynamic.
The Visual Communication course aims to prepare students for this diversity. It invites them to aspire to the highest level of professional practice and to take an imaginative and constructively critical approach to their own work. This course encourages students to be responsible for developing their creative abilities and to be aware of the broader cultural, social and political impact of design. Visual Communication studies focus on an understanding of the way the design process is formed or mediated by the contemporary sociopolitical framework within which it occurs.
The subjects in this course actively promote conceptual skills and design processing in the context of communication, over merely technical skills. This emphasis is found throughout the course, structured as it is to allow students to focus, particularly in its second half, on areas of interest to them.
This course is offered on a four-year, full-time basis. Students may study this program part time after consultation with the Director of Program.
