Honours
The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree provides the first of a two-tier structure, and is awarded after successful completion of three years (or equivalent) of full-time study. In general terms, the BA can be seen as a liberal introduction to the study of architecture as a discipline. This degree can stand alone, and equips students well to join other design fields or related disciplines, or to go on to further academic research and study. It also has an important role in preparing students for the second tier of the program, the BArch degree.
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Architecture is an Honours degree awarded after the successful completion of three years (or equivalent) of full-time study in the BA degree, plus an additional Honours program, including an Honours thesis.
The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture is a three-year full-time (or equivalent) degree.
The normal full-time load is four 6-credit-point subjects per semester. This equates to 48 credit points per year for three years, making a total of 144 credit points. Year 1, which is recommended to be taken in full-time mode, comprises four compulsory 6 credit-point subjects per semester. Years 2 and 3 comprise one 6 credit-point elective and three compulsory subjects per semester.

Sub-majors
Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (BA) students may be offered a sub-major if they undertake 24 credit points of electives in a specific, common area with electives drawn from any department or program within the Faculty (including the Architecture program).
Electives
Students must complete at total of 24 credit points of electives. These may be chosen from elective subjects offered within the Architecture program, electives offered by other programs within the faculty, and electives offered throughout the University.
Elective subjects offered within the Architecture program may vary from year to year, depending on staff availability. Students are advised of any changes/additions at the beginning of the academic year.
In special instances students may be directed to pick up a compulsory subject that they may otherwise have missed (for example, through advanced standing) instead of an elective. In all such cases, all required subjects are confirmed with individual students prior to enrolment.
Students entering the Architecture program with previous university experience may request exemptions from Elective Studies at the appropriate year level(s).
Elective subjects offered within the Architecture program
Subject to staff availability, the following electives will be offered within the Architecture program in 2004.
Years 2 and 3 electives
11271 Designing With Wood and Wood Composites 6cp
11272 Designing with Landscape Elements 6cp
11281 Patterns of early Human Settlement 6cp

11294 Architectural Experience A 6cp
11295 Architectural Experience B 6cp
11296 Architectural Experience C 6cp
11297 Architectural Experience D 6cp
Note: Other specialist study areas may be offered from time to time, according to available expertise.
The order of subjects presented in the course program is not prescriptive, but does illustrate the recommended pattern.
There will be a formal acknowledgment of prior learning for students entering from other institutions or from the profession. This acknowledgment may take the form of subject exemptions, or advanced standing, and will be decided by the Director of Program on a case-by-case basis.
It is recommended that new students in Year1 complete the three subjects 11211 Architectural Design Thinking, Making and Inhabiting, 11213 Introduction to Theory and Architecture and 11214 Architectural Design Architectural Communications concurrently, and in their first semester. It is possible, however, for students to join the program in either semester of Year 1, and undertake subjects in any order.
Students may 'carry' one uncompleted subject from one year into the next, and this may be an Architectural Design subject. Students must, however, successfully complete both Architectural Design subjects in any given year before enrolling in the Architectural Design subjects in the following year. There is no prescribed order for completion of subjects in Years 2 and 3, however students should bear in mind that most subjects are offered for only one semester each year.
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Architecture comprises a total of 168 credit points. This is made up of the 144 credit points of the base BA degree, along with an additional 24 credit points made up of three subjects: 11237 Research Methods (6cp) and 11238 Honours Research Proposal (6cp), which must be completed before proceeding to 11239 Honours Research Thesis (12cp). Students may begin the research subjects in Year 3, and thus complete the Honours degree in three-and-a-half years, or undertake the Honours subjects in an additional dedicated fourth year.
Admission requirements
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Architecture runs in a manner identical to the base degree BA, up until the point where eligible BA students are invited to enter the Honours program. To be eligible, students must have received at least a pass grade in all subjects undertaken in Year 1 of the BA, and received an average mark of at least 65 per cent for all subjects undertaken in Year 2. At the end of Year 2, such students will be invited to enter the Honours program.
Assessment
Provided that the above conditions have been met, the class of Honours to be awarded is determined as follows, subject to Faculty Board approval.
- First Class Honours average mark of 75 or above in subjects 11237 Research Methods, 11238 Honours Research Proposal, and 11239 Honours Research Thesis
- Second Class Honours Division 1 average mark of 70 but <75 in subjects as above
- Second Class Honours Division 2 average mark of 65 but <70 in subjects as above
Students who undertake the Honours program but who record failures in any of the Honours components are (having satisfactorily completed all other subjects) awarded the Pass degree of the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture.
